I recommend using a tile spade to dig a soil pit, document soil conditions, and key out if the soil is hydric. Use auger holes to take a look at the soil morphology along the hydric/non-hydric line but NOT to key out if the soil is hydric, auger cores are disturbed samples.

The best soil augers for use in the NE are One Piece Eijkelkamp Dutch Augers with a 7 cm blade (model J-880), call CFE Equipment 1-800-665-6794 for price/order info. Price around $50.00. Email me for more info.

: More applicants are submitting evidence of hydric / non-hydric soils when delineating BVW's. Rather than carrrying a shovel for looking at soils I'm considering buying a soils auger. Anyone have any sources for augers other than Ben Meadows (too expensive)?
