Why is biodiversity important?

Biodiversity is a measure of the health of our environment. Like the “canary in the coal mine”, changes in local biodiversity can provide early warning for environmental changes that may have direct human consequences.

Changes in biodiversity can signal diminished quality of the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe. Our actions in daily living can bring about changes in biodiversity, impacting the existence and health of animals and plants and the natural systems that support us. Biodiversity is important, also, as a natural asset to be respected and protected – as a legacy for future generations.
