knotweed erradication - anyone have luck..

Postby Clemmys » Wed Jan 23, 2008 3:24 pm

just wondering if anyone has had luck erradicating knotweed on this board... I've had some luck with foliar spraying at a detention basin and wetland replicaiton site, with the knotweed obviously outside of the wetlands by 30 feet or so... it took a good 2 years of spraying and cutting to get rid of the knotweed though...

just wondering if anyone else has performed or ordered treatement performed on knotweed and had success...

i'm having some boyscouts tackle an area at a city park this year... so any info/helpful advice would be great....

I recommend contacting Cynthia Boettner, Coordinator of the New England Invasive Plant Group (Cynthia_Boettner@fws.gov). If she doesn't know the answer, I bet she could put you in touch with someone who does.

The July 2005 AMWS Newsletter included an article on the Identification and Control of Invasive Knotweeds by Timothy W. Miller, Ph.D., a professor at Washington State University. The article is excellent and you should try to obtain a copy if you can.

He indicated that controlling these species is difficult. Be patient. The article discusses mowing and the use of various herbicides, including foliar application and injection of herbicide into the hollow stem of the plant. As with all herbicides, they must be used in accordance with label directions and the like.

Dr. Miller's contact information listed in the article is twmiller@wsu.edu.
