Biological Control

Biological control is the intentional introduction of natural enemies in order to increase predation upon a particular invasive plant species. Predation may decrease the invasive plants' competitive advantages over native species and weaken the invader by increasing leaf mortality, decreasing plant size, reducing flower and seed production, and/or limiting population expansion. The approval and importation of non-native biocontrol agents into the United States is regulated by the USDA. For additional information on the use of biocontrol against invasive plants, please see Section 4.4 of Massachusetts DCR’s Generic Environmental Impact Report (GEIR). For a summary of biocontrol techniques, please see page 146of The Practical Guide to Lake Management in Massachusetts.

for biological control case studies.
